our elections commission report. delivered by our election commission appointee, catalina ruiz-healy. you can sit here. if you would like. >> good evening. superintendent, and new president and vice president and commissioners. thanks for having me. i was honored to receive your appointment in march, 2011, to be your appointee to the commission for the san francisco election department. you have received a memo from me. and i can go over it quickly, and i hope you had a chance to read it. but basically the city charter authorizes the election commission to supervisor the elections. and we are charged with a fairly narrow scope of work, for generally setting the department of elections and for the proper administration of the department. so the budget and we hire and fire the department of elections. so take a breath here. the way that the commission works on their on and off years. in 2011 our work focused on operations and less on policy. because we are getting ready to implement elections in the even years. and so we oversaw three elections since i have been commissioner. one prima

responsible solutions. they say their goal is to, quote, encourage elected officials to stand up for solutions that will prevent gun violence. it's a new political pressure group, in other words. congresswoman gabby giffords and her husband launched this today in a high profile, well done media blitz. they sat through a moving interview with diane sawyer. they published a joint op ed in usa today where they demanded change from washington. but they also pointed to their own unique role in this fight, not just with the former congresswoman as a victim of gun violence, but with her having been a member of congress who was a staunch supporter of the second amendment. gabby giffords was a very pro-gun rights democratic member of congress. she and her husband are not commie liberal pinkos coming to confiscate yours guns. they are both gun owners themselves. impact on the 2012 election, chris christie is a reality waiting to happen. jonathan martin is a senior political reporter for politico and joins me now. chris christie is everywhere, on the cover of "time" magazine, "morning joe," the "today show," he always has a way of grabbing attention. certainly, the fact he's taking on his own party puts him in the front lines of the conversation about how to reinvigorate the republican party after two losses. >> he's a congenital newsmaker and it helps he lives not far from the hudson river in terms of national tv. he can be in a car and be in midtown manhattan pretty fast in a way that a governor of, say, louisiana can't do quite as easily. i think that certainly helps governor christie, but there's no question he is good copy, in terms of taking his own party or speaking out about the hurricane that the hip east coast, he's somebody that has a knack for getting attention. what i'm curious about is what the republican base, is he helping himself here of late and how's this all going to play when we're in iowa and new hampshire and south carolin
